Western Digital Blue 500GB M.2 Solid State Drive

Western Digital Blue

Western Digital Blue 500GB M.2 Solid State Drive At SATA prices, the WD Blue SN500 delivers NVMe-class performance. You can purchase the drive with confidence with a five-year warranty, an in-house built controller, and NAND that supports endurance ratings of up to 300TBW. We only wish WD had higher capacity offerings.

The most recent NVMe SSD from WD aims to complete the portfolio of the company, but it also feels like the beginning of the end for SATA SSDs. To complement its WD Black SN750, WD recently dropped its all-new WD Blue SN500. The Blue SN500 targets resellers, system builders, or just any customer on a budget, as opposed to the WD Black, which is designed for those looking for one of the best SSDs on the market.

M.2 NVMe SSDs are quicker, smaller, and can also be cheaper to make. They’re essentially all PCBs with components on them, after all. They do not need an external enclosure, nor do they need an extra connector like SATA drives. But those are not the greatest burden on the overall production cost of an SSD; for both M.2 and SATA SSDs, DRAM raises the price substantially.

In most modern SSDs, DRAM comes in at least the better-performing ones, which is why the WD Blue SN500 is very unusual. As an entry-level NVMe SSD, it outperforms SATA SSDs and is very competitive, but eschews an expensive DRAM chip. As in the case of the Toshiba OCZ RC100, it also does not mooch off device assets as the NVMe Host Memory Buffer function does. WD wanted to do something a bit different instead.

WD recently invited us to its headquarters for a briefing on the WD Black line of SSDs, during which many proof-of-concept SSDs were also demonstrated by the company. In order to better define and understand client SSD workload patterns and enable an optimal allocation of device resources in a more cost-effective manner, WD has conducted numerous tests. For most PC workloads, two of these tests consisted of learning how much DRAM and SLC cache an SSD requires.

Western Digital Blue WD found

that it could retain 90-99 percent of the output of an SSD with very little memory for caching the File Translation Layer, which usually resides in DRAM, with a better understanding of data location. Instead of 512 MB of DRAM, 4 MB is adequate for most applications, the company found. The official amount of memory onboard the SN500 has not been released by WD. The SSD does not have an external DRAM chip, but within the processor, there is still a small amount of memory that serves a similar function.

WD also checked to see how much SLC cache an SSD would really need to fulfil performance requirements in the real world. The firm concluded that bigger is better after sifting through and researching burst trends in multiple real-user scenarios and typical benchmarks in Windows 10 environments. But, how much bigger is great, anyway? 99.5 percent of the time, a paltry 320 MB was enough, but 99.9 percent of the time, 3.2 GB was enough. Ok, and guess what? 3.2 GB corresponds with the sum of SLC cache we are checking on the SN500.

At Rs 4500, it’s totally worth the money. When you know how to open your system, it’s easy to update. WD ought to have a screw included. The distinction between this and green is that it has a new controller, improved stamina, and a slightly improved pace for reading/writing. But trust me that new things are always better. Quality product from WD

In terms of comparisons, this is certainly not the best M.2. But it definitely serves a reason. WD did a fine job with it. The only comparison is the Samsung 8xx series, which is faster than WD, no doubt.
After doing some benchmarking with CrystalDiskMark, due to slower benchmark performance, I thought of returning the product, but I was more than satisfied with this after doing some real-world experiments.

But the variations are scarcely apparent in real-world use. The great advantage, apart from that, is the gain in battery backup. My battery backup has increased to over 6 hours from 4.5 hours after downloading this SSD. I tried LITEON & 850 EVO earlier, neither of which gave more than 4.5 hours. Is the value of a few seconds of extra backup in an hour or so worth 90 minutes? Very certainly not. For me, it was an unexpected surprise. It appears that WD has strong power control!

 Excellent speeds, fast boot times

I replaced my 1 tb hard drive with this .all is easy and snappy in my laptop. Boot time decreased to 3 secs from 25 secs. Often, apps launch very easily. I got this for 21k and I had to say this was my laptop’s best investment. For anyone curious it doesn’t have an M.2 screw needed to keep it in place, just check if your motherboard or laptop has a screw for it otherwise you may want to consider asking my laptop had a screw at a nearby hardware store or a computer shop.
