Google Meeting Host Join

Google Meeting Host Join Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Google is making further moves into the video messaging room, now offering its premium video conference service Google Meet free to consumers. Previously only available to companies using G Suite, Meet is now open to anyone, in a step that puts Google in competition with rival Zoom video chat.

Although Google Hangouts and Duo have previously been available for casual video chatting, Meet allows up to 100 participants to call at once and includes features such as scheduling, screen sharing, and real-time captioning.

Google Meet’s free edition allows you to build a free account at Google. Video calls would have a limit of 60 minutes, but Google said it would not be implementing the restriction until after Sept. 30.

Google also set out a range of default Meet privacy safeguards, including host controls (such as the ability to allow or refuse presence at a meeting, and mute or delete participants), complex meeting codes, and transit encryption. It appears to hit Zoom, which saw a huge increase in users since the coronavirus lockdowns and quarantines began — but has faced a range of security problems lately, including uninvited “Zoombombing” meetings with visitors.

1. Go to meet.google.com (or, open the app on iOS or Android, or start a meeting from Google Calendar).

2. Click Start new meeting, or enter your meeting code.

3. Choose the Google account you want to use.

4. Click Join Meeting. You’ll have the ability to add others to your meeting, too.

How to use Google Meet, available free

To register for the free Google Meet edition, go to the Google Meet website. Enter your Google Meet name, email, country, and primary use (personnel, business, school, or government). Agree to the terms of service offered by Google, and click Send.

Google is far from being the only tech giant trying to pick up some of Zoom’s customers — Twitter, Skype, and Microsoft have all recently launched new online video messaging tools and services for the community.

The free edition of Meet began rolling out earlier this month. You’ll be able to use the web-based video chat service at meet.google.com and on iOS or Android smartphone phones.
